I really like being vague about who I am, which lets the rest of my website and body of work do the talking. But I don't want to be a complete mystery to my neighbors on Neocities, since it's a website community built on being personal. So here are all my answers to MOUSELING.net's 100 Questions for Webmasters!
Last updated: 2026-JUN-17
π 1. Please introduce yourself.
Hello, I am TabF5. I am dying to make things, but I'm also kinda lazy
β 2. How long have you been making websites?
I've been doing it on and off for about half a decade. Only really took it seriously when I started building this site near the end of 2025 to join and interact with people on Neocities
π 3. And what got you into the hobby?
I first tried it when I took an HTML/CSS/JS class in college, then I used it again under a previous username to organize a bunch of links I had, and now I'm really doing it for the love of the website itself. Also to get the fuck away from Instagram and the like
π 4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
Almost exclusively personal websites, since all of them make me slow down and pay attention to a person more thoroughly than a standard social media profile. Some other websites are cool though, like everyone's favorite WeatherStar 4000+ or handy web apps like Photopea
ποΈ 5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
When I'm building a new site from scratch, I tend to draw a plan out on paper and go from there. But when I'm updating an existing site, I start right at the coding step and improvise a design as I go
π‘ 6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
This is tough because I actually don't have any idols, but if I had to pick something close to one right now, Guy Billout is a big influence on my vector art. He might slip from memory a year or so from now though. Often times, my inspiration comes from small things I've absorbed from all the various YouTube videos and social media posts I've seen over the past two decades, letting bits of everything here and there influence me. I have a hard time recalling specific examples now, since what I watch keeps changing. It went from 2000s viral videos to 2010s gaming videos to 3D animators to skit comedy to reckless engineering to... economic videos now? God that's boring. There's a bunch of other random shit in-between all of that too, as my tastes have been ridiculously atomized by recommendation algorithms. The ultimate point is that I can't really recall any single or major sources of inspiration, but I do love collecting links to other people's site designs that inspire me
β€οΈ 7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
The part where you finish what you're working on and share it with everyone. Potent source of life fuel right there
π 8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
Patience, usually. While I can get excited about a complicated or time-consuming site idea, once I start it, I eventually find myself taking the quickest way out to get it finished to share with the world. It's a very useful habit to have instead of having tons of unfinished projects, but I sometimes feel like I rob myself from more thoroughly enjoying the creative process
π 9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
The same. I try to vary how sections are arranged sometimes, but I don't want to take time away from focusing on the page contents itself. I don't like spending too much time finding new ways to display things, unless doing so REALLY benefits the viewing/reading experience
πΆ 10. How confident are you with CSS?
I know enough basics to get by
β 11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
Nope lol
π¦ 12. What is your favourite HTML element?
<span> by a long shot. It's so nice being able to slap one down like duct tape as needed
π¨ 13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Pick a font. It's crucial
β 14. Do you know JavaScript?
Yeah a little bit
π€ 15. How about PHP?
I have no interest
π» 16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
Sort of? I just try to keep things simple and efficient while also having some character to it so it's not boring
βοΈ 17. Are you more focused on content or design?
CONTENT. Design is still important since I like have visuals at minimum too, but I care deeply about the point of something rather than just how it looks
π§ 18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
Let's all put on our thinking caps for this one
π 19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
I don't mind people making them. The 2020s have been rough on everyone and we all need an escape. But I personally don't go out of my way looking for them, as I do have some Frutiger Aero fatigue now. I'm more curious to find the new things that define how people will look back on our current times
β 20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
I have no idea what that means but my site seems to be working fine. Ignore the ten billion <div>s in my code
π 21. What are your opinions on buttons and banners?
88x31 buttons are really clever, they're a super lightweight way to advertise and link to other people's sites. There are some crazy cool animations people have made with them too! I don't really care for the other types (banners, blinkies, etc) since I'm not big on maximalism with my website, but don't let me stop you from using those if you enjoy them
𧱠22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
I like them, it's a cool way to immediately learn of other websites to check out. I agree with the notion that everyone should have a button wall so that people can keep exploring the web
π 23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
I'd probably make the exact same thing again lmao
π§Ώ 24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
Yes! I'm very envious of people that show mastery of artistic talents that require patience and an appreciation for the process itself. My brain feels hardwired to optimize so much of what I do, and it's hard for me to pick up completely new hobbies that don't already overlap with my existing skills. I avoided calling myself an artist for the longest time because of this, because I honestly feel more like a writer that hates only working with pure text
π 25. What text editor do you use?
π26. Why do you use that one?
It's like having all the awesome UX/UI innovation of VSCode but with none of the stupid Microsoft spyware. (But I also use GitHub like a lazy hypocrite lol)
πΌοΈ 27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
I host them right on Neocities with a Supporter plan. I have the cash to help keep the place going so I might as well
π 28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
I have no idea what the existing debates are, but I can definitely say I'm not interested in Nekoweb. I really don't click with the super-cutesy aesthetic they have over there, as I prefer the serious (but still friendly) UI of Neocities. While I certainly do not embody any of the "rawr XD" silliness that Nekoweb prides itself on, I probably will have no reason to complain about them if Neocities ever goes to shit, because these two platforms are the only game in town right now. (Yes you can self-host a site and do other things to meet people outside of these two platforms, but the social features that Neocities offers are entirely why I got into making this website)
π 29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
Neocities says my site is currently 158MB. My guess is that it might hit closer to 250MB by the end of 2026.
πΎ 30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
Absolutely! I got two local copies of ALL my files, and even a copy of everything in a storage VPS online. My site is also in a private GitHub repo too but I'm not gonna rely on that
πͺ© 31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
Usually simple, but a highly visual website can be interesting too. I often look for the substance of a website and why it exists, such as personal vignettes of daily life or projects and stories built with intent, rather than sites that try to be as maximalist as possible with huge blinkie and banner collections filling the entire page. No shade to any personal site that does this though- I'd still rather look at those than social media. (NOTE: Original artworks and graphic designs count as works of substance, I'm talking about sites that are just made of other people's images)
π¨ 32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
No, but I definitely stick to simple shapes. I have a hard time making things with organic shapes, so everything I do is super geometric
β 33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
Absolutely not. Neocities has replaced all the time I normally wasted on doomscrolling, it's so much better being here. Who the hell would want to go back to forcing their creativity into the desired format of a social media platform, which then treats you like you don't exist if you don't have an endless quantity and consistency of said posts? Meanwhile on here, you can build a site once and it'll be enjoyed over and over again
π₯ 34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
I've made webmaster friends on Neocities for sure! Outside of that though, I only have one real-life friend that I got into making websites from scratch. It's hard to get into it unless you're creative and okay with sitting at a computer all day, managing code. It's not going to be universally loved by everyone
π 35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
Yes! I've shown my site to several of my real-life friends. They all enjoy what I do, but they'd never want to try making a site themselves
π» 36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
Pretty much near-daily. I have to update the counts on my Free Stickers page very frequently. I otherwise always try to have a major project or addition in the works
πΈοΈ 37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I tried to design my site in a way where it holds up over time. I want to focus on adding more meaning to my site, not just how it all looks. So ideally it will never change again
π¬ 38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
Tough to say, maybe all of the above? I ultimately want to make stories and present them in a way that as many people as possible can get into and resonate with. It's a careful balance of making things with my personality in them, while not having those things bogged down with too much detail so the message I'm trying to say stays clear. (I say this as if I actually have the ability and non-laziness to make something detailed lmao.) That being said, I do also have an entire page dedicated to random old shit I enjoyed as a kid
πΌ 39. Do you do web design professionally?
No
π 40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
No, I would probably hate that. Miss me with that React Tailwind Angular Bun NPM Astro Electron slop. Also I won't disclose what I do for a living for privacy reasons, but I'll say that it's a remote job that is somehow still fine despite all the other ones like it being massacred by AI and contractors. I'm just enjoying the ride at this current workplace while it lasts, because it may never be this good again
π§ 41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
Email is the ONLY way I make people talk to me on Neocities! I'm super burned-out on things like Discord and have no interest in using it to meet new online people again. Servers can get exhausting, and being in direct access to someone on a chat app results in a lot more yapping vs. an email where the communication is slower but more deliberate. There's obviously nothing wrong with yapping and hanging out with people, I'm just at the stage of adulthood where I don't have the time to introduce even more people in my life to hang out with. I already have friends! I can definitely talk to people via an occasional email though, and I've made new pen pal friends on Neocities this way. If you're someone who's completely alone though, THEN I would recommend adding Neocities people on Discord. I hope you find good friends too
π¦ 42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
Other than YouTube, nope. The Neocities feed is all I need. It's scary how YouTube is really the only way I interact with the larger world right now. The site does stupid things, but they're a lot more manageable than the endless shouting matches on Instagram/TikTok/Twitter/Bluesky/etc. I would be very depressed if I somehow lost access to the non-brainrot videos I still watch there
π¬ 43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I already answered this in #41 oops. But I only use Discord for existing long-time friends, not to meet new people. I otherwise avoid such apps
π΅ 44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
Here's 20 or so: Swardy, The Midnight, Anamanaguchi, trndytrndy, Khruangbin, nimino, OK Go, Brock Berrigan, The Glitch Mob, Nitemoves, HOME, Eagle Eyed Tiger, Mont Duamel, Echo Pork, Fox Stevenson, Dirtwire, Tycho, The Shanghai Restoration Project, Maximum Love, acloudyskye, Iglooghost, Teddy Killerz, Vorso, Yuno Miles, djeb, and KOAN Sound. It's mostly electronic
ποΈ 45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
I'm considering making more in the future. It depends on how I want people to discover the work on each site, as that can really add to the experience
π² 46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
I don't think I'm going to add more primary pages beyond what I already have with the stories and the museum and all that. I might explore different topics in my stories, or do hidden one-off pages like this one, but any more serious additions I want to explore may warrant a new website and/or an additional username
πΆβπ«οΈ 47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
I do present my real self, but I like to keep a lot of it obscured for the most part. I really want what I make to do the talking for me
π€ 48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
Yep! Already answered this one technically
βοΈ 49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
Yeah it works fine I guess. It's a lot to keep track of as I continue to add to my site, but I can manage
π« 50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
No opinion, I've already mentioned what I personally enjoy in websites but that shouldn't be a blueprint for everyone
π 51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
See previous answer
π 52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
I probably would've cared about semantic HTML if I learned about it sooner, but now that I'm this far deep in <div>s I'm just not gonna bother
π 53. Do you consider different browsers?
Yes, including mobile
π¦ 54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
I've made too many posts about this already, especially because it's a browser I use out of necessity rather than fully endorsing, but Brave just works. I want to love Firefox-based stuff but it's just too janky for me, and the other Chromium browsers have dogshit adblocking. Orion looks cool but is buggy as hell. Here's hoping Ladybird is good
π§ 55. And what OS are you on?
Zorin for my desktop, Macbook Neo as my laptop
π₯οΈ 56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
I really try to not be annoying about using Linux. I just use it because Windows just keeps getting worse, and I want something that makes my life easy. Ubuntu-based distros do that for me, and Zorin looks prettier than Mint. It's all the same stuff though. Also I got a Neo because EU reparaibility standards were forced upon it, so I feel less bad about using a Macbook whenever I need to do something Linux absolutely cannot. Apple silicon is also really nice
π± 57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
Yep, there's even a special homepage design for mobile visitors
π 58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
It is annoying if the music is loud, but I'm used to it. I'm not gonna tell people to stop doing it unless they're playing literal air raid sirens or something obnoxious. Otherwise I can mute my browser tab as needed
π 59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
It's a cool idea but I've never felt like exploring or joining them, I prefer exploring via button walls
β©οΈ 60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
I don't really look at shrines tbh
πͺ¨ 61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
I hope not! I put way too much effort into making my pages feel like something new, or at least different. This doesn't apply to this exact page you're looking at though, I was gonna do something more complicated but then it would've made this all harder to read
π 62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
An ideal website is any personal site that isn't just a social media page. Pretty easy to strive for that
ποΈ 63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
I guess I technically am? I use a computer to make simple 3D models or vector graphics, but I don't really draw. I do carve wood though
ποΈ 64. What are your favourite resource sites?
The only ones I really use are Background Tiles, Freesound, and Google Fonts
π 65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
It is my duty as a US citizen to occasionally shorten my lifespan with junk food
π€ 66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
Do more with less. It's going to suck starting out and feeling like you can't do anything while you learn, but there's a lot you CAN do with what you have
π« 67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
Sometimes I hard-code it if I feel like it's not gonna change or be all that important. Using search-and-replace tools are essential in manual website-making, especially if I wrote the same thing a hundred times and need to edit them all at once. I otherwise use a CSS file
ποΈ 68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
Never heard of them
πͺ 69. How about table-based layouts?
Never tried them
π¦ 70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
Not really? I kinda just let layouts happen as I use flexbox, or block layouts that wrap to new lines
π 71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
CSS for sure when starting out a new site, HTML/JS once you finish that site and just add to it
β¬ 72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
I imagine it would be useful for some, but I'm not interested
ποΈ 73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
As needed
β 74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
Intermediate
β¨οΈ 75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
Nah
πͺ 76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
I did benefit from learning some basics back in college, but what really helped was just figuring out how to look things up in MDN or elsewhere. HTML syntax can be learned in a day, CSS syntax can be learned in a week, the rest is Googling questions over and over to find the names of HTML/CSS things you need. If you can get to that point, you are comfortably an intermediate. Otherwise you should just find a course or tutorial series that looks fun enough to actually do to completion
βοΈβπ₯ 77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
Probably
βοΈ 78. Thoughts on floating elements?
None
π 79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
In your CSS file, you create an html {} rule and set a font-size in pixels there. Then you use rem for everything. Sometimes you'll need to use %, vh, vw, svh, svw (especially for mobile breakpoints) but it's otherwise rem all day every day
π 80. Do you have a favourite font?
Not in general. But I like using only specific fonts within my site
π§ 81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
It sounds fun but I have no idea how that would work
π 82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
Yes! I try to rotate between the Special Sauce, Last Updated, and Random search filters on Neocities
π 83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
Nah I just follow them. I should probably be using RSS but the Neocities ecosystem has been run well so far, so I don't feel compelled to try to break that dependency at the moment. Similar to how Steam is a closed ecosystem, but it's run well so everyone just keeps using it
ποΈ 84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
How far I can push the "doing more with less" mantra
πΏ 85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
I really try not to collect, as I have a fear of hoarding too many things I don't use. But the museum is a good list of the few things I feel are worth collecting
π 86. How often and for how long are you online?
Forever
π― 87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
I don't think I really have one. I'm just really trying to make anyone who visits say "oh wow this is different" but in a way where they actually want to keep visiting again in the future. I do say curse words though so maybe kids shouldn't be here
π½ 88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
Nope
π§βπ» 89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
I do occasionally, like how I wrote the code that makes each of the Main Stories work. But I generally try to avoid it because it gets depressing if I do it for do long (but that doesn't apply to HTML/CSS)
π 90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I like the simplicity of raw HTML/CSS too much
π 91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
Yes, I like watching number go up. I will take over the world
πͺ§ 92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
Nah, tried a few but they don't really stick for me. Onio's chatroom has grown on me though
βοΈ 93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
Right into the editor. It gets hard to keep track of really long sections of text, but I just roll with it lol
π 94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
This is a trick question, nice try
π°οΈ 95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
Sorta. I have old usernames for all my old stuff, but I don't want the people from those phases in my life to immediately find me where I am now, because it could set an unhealthy standard or expectation I used to have with my work in the past. I'm okay with them eventually finding this new name, I just don't want to make it easy. Nothing is deleted by the way, it's all out there
πΏ 96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
Archive for sure. Let it live forever
π« 97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I'm generally pretty secretive compared to most people on Neocities, but I have now changed that with this page you're reading here. Or maybe I'm still a mystery compared to others. I'm gonna keep this page semi-hidden like this though, since I want most people to know me for the work I make
βΌοΈ 98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
Sure thing, it's THIS FUCKING GUY! GET HIM
π· 99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
Yes, by using WEBP. I do not care that it is the most annoying image format in the world. It saves me so much on space, I am going to keep using it. (You wanna know what should actually get hate? That stupid HEIC format that iPhones use)
π― 100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
That was fun! I had fun
